Our client is seeking a Plant operator to fill a critical role in their maintenance department.  They are a small group, so everyone participates and wears multiple hats on a consistent basis.  The Plant Operator will perform skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work on the potable water treatment and distribution system.  You’ll need to have experience with operating various tools so that you’re comfortable performing a variety of maintenance tasks relative to water distribution and treatment.  This may include simple wrenches, but more complex tools and equipment.

Our ideal candidate is someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands duty, doesn’t shy away from on-call duties, and is willing to continually learn on the job and beyond.  If you’re not already certified in this area, we’ll help you get there, but you need to want to learn.


The role will require you to work within our plant building(s), but also out in the field (all seasons) based on the situation.  You’ll be exposed to various noise levels, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, possible noxious odors, gases and mechanical electrical hazards (with all appropriate safety measures in place).  Because this role deals with Water, you’ll be working in and around it, sometimes having exposure to roadways and traffic conditions, working on slippery and uneven surfaces, in addition to rough terrain. You might need to dig a ditch with equipment, or shovel out a hole.



  • Maintain, operate, and adjust treatment plant pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and other equipment (including motorized equipment)
  • Identify and assist in the coordination of maintenance activities on all equipment associated with facility.
  • Compile, maintain, update, and validate maintenance documentation, plant log and various quality control reports including data entry into computer spreadsheets.
  • Operate and maintain wells, reservoirs, and treatment facilities; inspect residential and commercial service issues.
  • Conduct facility rounds including monitoring of chemical usage and supply, and assessment of equipment for proper operation.
  • Oversee; Lay and fit pipelines; make water line taps; install water services, fire hydrants, valves, and other water devices.
  • Perform field duties related to the water system; take water samples and inspect new construction.
  • Identify service and main leaks; operate pipe locators; inspect backflow devices.
  • Read and update water distribution maps and as-built plans and blueprints.
  • Clean and monitor pump stations and related equipment.
  • Perform emergency repairs to water lines as necessary; establish proper traffic control devices.
  • Repair, maintain and install water meters and related service lines; read meters; turn services off and on as necessary.
  • Layout and install traffic signs; occasionally dig trenches/holes.



Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of water distribution maintenance and repair.
  • Common tools, materials, and motorized vehicles and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a water distribution system.
  • Pumps, valves and backflow devices.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Safe work practices and policies.


Ability to:

  • Work with the variety of tools related to water system maintenance, i.e. grinders, gas powered cutters, wrenches, etc. (for general labor, semi-skilled labor functions)
  • Learn to safely operate a variety of maintenance equipment.
  • Participate and engage in continuing education opportunities (company paid)
  • Perform routine groundwater treatment procedures.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Read and understand schematic diagrams.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn software a plus
